As my '03 4.2SE was in for servicing today I asked the garage to look at the suspension bushes, suspecting failure as there has been some 'thumping' over poor road surfaces. On collecting the car this evening I was told that the problem lay in the rose joints at the bottom of each shock absorber. This is seemingly a more common problem with S-Types
The rear joints are separate items - about £16 each. The front ones, however, form part of the shock absorber itself and I was quoted £240 for each one (not the pair) if I have sports suspension and £330 each for comfort suspension. Shocking indeed!
Interestingly, I have to find out which suspension I have as it's apparently not clear from looking at the setup, and the fact that it's an SE does not necessarily mean that it has the 'comfort' rather than the 'sport' suspension.

I had to fit two shocks on my 4.2 se and they are the comfort type, however the bushes at the bottom where the shock bolts on to can be bought for £30 a pair including vat. Can't understand why the sport type are so much cheaper as usually sport suspension is more expensive, would they fit?

Sorry, Patrick, rude of me not to reply. I'll look into it a bit further - the garage (an independent, but Jag-trained) assured me that comfort was more expensive than sports but was just as adamant that the front shocks could not be separated. It's not a safety issue or even a ride/handling concern, apparently, and I'll see about it this autumn.
